SMPS Advances: January 2024

SMPS Advances: August 2022

To provide transparency and expand member engagement, SMPS HQ provides an executive summary of the board of directors’ discussions and decisions following each regular meeting. The eight-member board of directors meets at least four times each fiscal year to fulfill its responsibility of governing the Society and advancing the strategic needs of our members, the organization, and the A/E/C marketing profession. The meeting typically also includes the SMPS Foundation president and the senior management staff.

Our volunteer leaders and staff members met in person on January 18-19, 2024, at SMPS HQ in Alexandria, VA for its regularly scheduled quarterly meeting. At this meeting, a variety of strategic and operational items were discussed. These include the following:

  • Receiving an update on our investments that are part of our reserve funds as well as advice on updating the reserves management policy.
  • Updating our policy on fees certification paid by the SMPS Fellows.
  • In the context of the forthcoming CEO transition, reviewing all of our key financial policies and progress on our fiscal year budget.
  • Reviewing our growth plans, including a more active approach with the chapters on membership promotion.
  • Receiving a report from the SMPS Foundation on its activities, including an updated mission statement.
  • Discussing needs for an ethics committee to review and support our membership policies.
  • Exploring how SMPS might be organized in the future to better support local volunteers and improve the membership experience.
  • Held a planning session to review the process for the CEO succession (Geary resigned on January 5, effective April 5, 2024). Additionally, Marci Thompson was appointed the interim CEO, effective on Geary’s departure.
The board’s next in-person meeting is scheduled for April 17, 2024. If you have any questions regarding these matters or the Society’s board meetings, please contact SMPS Chief Executive Officer, Michael V. Geary, CAE, at michael@smps.org.
