The knowledge and skills needed to build business and advance your career

Professional services marketing, specifically in the A/E/C arena, often takes a different approach than traditional marketing. Since inception, SMPS has made it our priority to help members gain the knowledge and skills needed to build business for their firms.

In conjunction with Professional Testing Corporation, SMPS analyzes the practice of professional services marketing to determine the knowledge and skills most critical. From this exercise, the six Domains of Practice for Professional Services Marketing are developed and refreshed on a regular basis.

From research and planning to client development and promotional activities, the domains will help prepare you for what’s now—and what’s next—in A/E/C marketing and business development. Turn to SMPS, the center for A/E/C business growth, and put all six domains to work for you and your firm:

  • Review the knowledge areas and skills sets to evaluate your level of mastery. Decide where you need to develop your skills and consider some of our online learning opportunities to close the gap.
  • Pursue the Certified Professional Services Marketer (CPSM) designation, which proves proficiency in the domains and sets the bar for professional expertise and excellence. More than 1,000 professionals have already earned their CPSM.

To see the six critical knowledge and skills sets, download our Domains of Practice for Professional Services Marketing. And to learn more about the CPSM program and what’s required to earn the designation, visit our CPSM page. We’ve also developed a supplemental guide, Gap Analysis for Professional Services Marketing, which includes the six Domains so that you can evaluate your level of experience and expertise utilizing one document.
