What motivates you to volunteer your valuable time to SMPS?
SMPS helped me create a professional community that I rely on to be successful and fulfilled in my career. I want to motivate others to see the organization as an extension of their professional lives and not just as something else that has to get done on the checklist.
The staff’s experience and knowledge is the short answer. HQ staff is integral to chapter leadership. I relied on their advice, coaching, and support. For me that came in the form of CLS, as well as multiple conversations for our leadership on specific challenges we were facing.

We’re excited to see our chapter leaders in DC! If you haven’t registered yet, there’s still time. Join us from April 17-19 at the historic Washington Hilton hotel for this in-person symposium. Every attendee may submit for a stipend ($600 max) from SMPS HQ after CLS to help defray hotel/travel costs of attending. Register now.
Last year, SMPS HQ held AEC.AI, an AI conference in DC to a sold-out crowd. A lot has changed in the world of AI since then, and we’re bringing our presenter and all the latest to Los Angeles. Spread the word and join us in May.
SMPS volunteers: April 21-27 is National Volunteer Week but every week (and every day!) we celebrate you. Your time and dedication never go unnoticed. Thank you for being an integral part of the Society and for helping move the profession and A/E/C industries forward. We wouldn’t be here today without you.
Have you visited the SMPS bookstore lately? We’ve added a few new e-books to our Marketer Must-Reads series. Check out ones on branding, business strategy, and technology & AI.
Did you know? SMPS has analyzed the practice of professional services marketing to determine the knowledge and skills most critical. From this exercise, six Domains of Practice were developed—and are the foundation for our CPSM program. We’ve also developed a supplemental guide, Gap Analysis for Professional Services Marketing. The Gap Analysis includes the six domains so that you can evaluate your level of experience and expertise utilizing one document.
Join us on May 2 as we share highlights of our Chapter Leadership Symposium. We’ll also have special guests from SMPS HQ’s marketing department. Don’t miss it!
A membership with SMPS can be transferred from one individual to another. For example, if a staff member leaves a position and, if the firm covered the cost of the membership, the firm can move the remaining time on the membership to a new hire. In this situation, the Transfer Membership form should be completed, which will split the membership at no additional cost between the individual leaving the firm and the new hire.
SMPS HQ has put together resources for chapter volunteers to help with membership retention. Visit the SMPS HQ YouTube channel, where you’ll find a playlist of Your SMPS Membership Moment videos. If you have specific membership-related questions or need more advice on how to build and retain your local SMPS membership, reach out to matthew@smps.org.
