What motivates you to volunteer your valuable time to SMPS?
Since joining SMPS Alaska in 2014, I’ve always been involved in some sort of capacity on a committee or board and I’m so thankful for the network I’ve gained. What motivates me to volunteer my time to SMPS are the people, growth opportunities, and lessons I’ve learned along the way. I chose to volunteer on roles that I wouldn’t normally do in my firm position so I could gain leadership experience that way; it’s helped me be a great strategic thinker!
I loved being chapter president because it forced me to break out of my comfort zone and learn new skills. I always attended the HQ monthly or quarterly chapter president webinars and meet ups. Having a cohort to lean on and bounce off ideas when you feel all alone was my savior. It benefited the chapter because it gave me the confidence to keep going and to be there to support my board in return.
Out of curiosity, what finally convinced you to become a president?
I wanted to challenge myself to be the person that others saw in me. To let my light shine, when I had always shoved it down in a corner because of my fears. Ultimately, I chose to become president because I wanted to be the leader I’ve always wanted for myself and that just made it really meaningful to me.

Thanks to all chapters for championing the Certified Professional Services Marketing (CPSM) Program. For chapters who offer study groups, there’s a PowerPoint presentation, Everything You Need to Know About Becoming a CPSM, available for download, customization, and use within the Certification folder of your All Chapter Leaders community of MySMPS. Within this folder, you’ll also find the useful CPSM FAQ sheet and the current CPSM Handbook. Access the Marketer on your phone, tablet, and computer so you can enjoy articles at home or on the go. Please remind your chapter of this SMPS member benefit!
Originally published in 2016 and curated by A/E/C professionals, MARKENDIUM® got updated and relaunched on May 10, 2023. Make sure you have a copy (or two!) on your shelf or in your virtual library! And if you have the six-book series, show some MARKENDIUM love on social media by using the hashtag #Markendium, and tagging @SMPSHQ.
Chapter volunteers, March Membership Madness is happening—and continuing through July. Download our PDF for more details and see how the campaign works.
Are your chapter members looking for in-person events in addition to online learning?
