How has SMPS helped you in your career?
SMPS has allowed me to keep abreast of the latest trends, technologies, and processes used in marketing through their website, email blasts, webinars, Marketer journal, and mostly importantly, local events held in the Pittsburgh area. Last spring, I was able to co-sponsor an event on transportation and share new branding of our family of companies to the ideal audience.

Helpful hint to share with your fellow SMPS members: The 3rd Edition of the Marketing Handbook for the Design and Construction Professional really has become my guidebook. I frequently refer to it and suggest process improvements from it to my marketing team, as well as my business development and estimating colleagues.

Tell us something we would be surprised to learn about you. I am a degreed chemist and began a career in marketing over 20 years ago, in a position where a chemistry or chemical engineering degree was required. I still love science, but have honed my creative skills over time.

What I did at work yesterday: Yesterday I critiqued a pink team proposal for content gaps and customer readability. I also gathered market research and drafted a business plan for one of our subsidiary companies for next year. Finally, I worked with our engineers and a publication to get company exposure by explaining the core competency differentiation that we provide over our competition.

As a CPSM, how has certification benefited you? Being able to show a nationally recognized level of competency in any field gives credibility. One benefit in having that designation on social media such as LinkedIn, is that it gives colleagues searching for potential partners a reason to select me to make contact. In addition, when writing articles which give my company exposure to our client base, the reader sees me as an expert in the marketing of professional construction services.
