Progress Through Leadership

Spreading the word about the SMPS Foundation

Last month, I attended the SMPS Chapter Presidents’ Leadership Symposium (PLS) and met the incoming presidents for the 2017-2018 program year. Although each PLS is different and exciting, it still remains a favorite event for those who attend, especially me.

This year I presented the SMPS Foundation to a very energetic group, and I’m excited these members now know more about the foundation and plan to spread the word. During my presentation, a few incoming chapter presidents had questions. I thought I’d share some of these as they’re questions that may be on your mind.

  1. Can I request a foundation representative to come to my chapter and present the most recent research? And does the chapter have to pay for the speaker?
We are glad to come to your chapter and present our research findings. We have many topics to choose from, just visit the SMPS Foundation webpage to view our offerings. Regarding the expenses, we will work with your chapter to keep expenses low. Our goal is to have every dollar we fundraise go straight to our research projects.
  2. Who is the audience for the SMPS Foundation’s research topics?
Our audience includes all professionals in the A/E/C industries, and not just our members. We’re committed to being a leader and a go-to resource in regards to research for the built environment. We hope our members utilize the research to help make their firms and companies even more successful.

After presenting at PLS, I spoke with Melissa Lutz, the SMPS Foundation’s incoming president about the future success of the foundation. Since my presentation, I’ve had several chapter presidents reach out to share thoughts about the foundation or gather more information.

I’m thrilled we’re gaining so much momentum in my pursuit of each member knowing and understanding the SMPS Foundation and its mission and goals.

On another note, I wanted to share another recent success. I’m pleased to announce that both the Society and trustee board members have contributed financially to the SMPS Foundation. We have 100% participation! I know there is a lot more work to be done, but we are making progress and will continue to do so!

Thanks to all the board members from the bottom of my heart! Another goal accomplished! If you haven’t made a donation yet, please consider adding the SMPS Foundation to your list.
