2020-21 SMPS Call for Volunteers

MAKE A DIFFERENCE. BE ENGAGED. HAVE A VOICE.

We are seeking SMPS members who are ready to lend their experience and insight at the headquarters level. This is a great opportunity to serve your Society and make a difference within the profession.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • All volunteers must be a current SMPS member
  • Must sign a confidentiality and conflict of interest statement
  • Committee members should not serve as a volunteer on the chapter level during their program year (with the exception of chapter past president)
  • Some volunteer opportunities will require additional qualifications. If applicable, they will be stated under each description

Volunteer Opportunities

50th Anniversary Task Force

SMPS will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its founding in 2023. The purpose of this task force is to help the board of directors and staff appropriately recognize the organization and our members at this momentous occasion. Specific objectives include identifying relevant historical documents and items; developing anniversary messaging; assisting with producing displays and presentations; contributing to any fund-raising effort needed; and helping to organize events and coordination with our chapters.

Other Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with developing similar celebratory activities
  • A passion for SMPS and our history

Commitment

  • Work is expected to begin fall of 2020. This task force will exist into 2023 and may meet quarterly at first using online technology and later more frequently.

Deadline to submit: August 15, 2020

Certification Committee

Committee members serve in an advisory capacity to build awareness of the program, establish credibility of the profession through certification, cultivate professionalism, and help communicate the value of the CPSM designation as it supports career advancement.

Other Qualifications:

  • Must be a CPSM

Commitment:

  • Term: September 1, 2020 through August 31, 2021
  • Generally 1 monthly conference call
  • Tasks may be determined throughout the year. Time commitment TBD.

Chapter SFE and CPY Jurors

Jurors are asked to evaluate chapter entries for the Striving for Excellence and Chapter President of the Year awards.

Other Qualifications:

  • Must participate in volunteer committee training program

Commitment:

  • Late winter or early spring of 2021, jurors will be assigned a certain number of chapter entries to evaluate. Each juror will have 2 weeks to complete their evaluation and score sheets, including comments. It should take between 2-4 hours to review your entries, depending on your category. Once the evaluation process is complete, a 1-hour deliberation call will be scheduled for the jury members to participate in.

Diversity & Inclusion Task Force

The purpose of this task force is to suggest initiatives and strategic objectives to the board of directors and staff to increase awareness of and support diversity, equity, and inclusion in the membership, marketing profession, and our members’ firms.

Other Qualifications:
Ideal candidates asked to serve will have some of the following experiences:

  • Previous experience working on same or similar issues (professionally or as volunteer)
  • Experience leading culture change in an A/E/C firm(s) and/or organization
  • Served as a leader of an SMPS chapter and/or of a community organization(s)
  • Academic training and/or a relevant knowledge base on the issues

Commitment:

  • Work to begin mid-summer 2020. This task force is expected to exist for at least one year and may meet monthly at first and using online technology. When possible, in-person meetings may also be organized.

Professional Development Advisory Council

The advisory council will help guide the SMPS learning and professional development agenda. The Education Group will assist by recommending content for SMPS programs and publications and other resources to meet the need and interest of marketers and business developers.

Other Qualifications:

  • Previous experience leading chapter, regional or national programming. For example, previously served as Chapter Program Chair or Conference Chair.

Commitment

  • Term: September 1, 2020 through August 31, 2021
  • This group would meet each quarter virtually.

Other Opportunities

From time to time, SMPS has a need for volunteers to work on special projects throughout the year. If you are interested, please complete the survey so we have your name ready at hand.

SERVICE

  • In order to ensure a fair opportunity for others to serve, members may only serve on a particular volunteer group for no more than two consecutive years
  • Participants may not serve on more than one committee at a time
