2021-24 SMPS Call for Marketer Volunteers

Are you ready to lend your experience and insight to the Marketer journal? Serving on the Marketer Editorial Committee is a great opportunity to serve your Society and make a difference within the profession. The deadline to apply is November 19, with notifications going out to new members by the end of November. We anticipate our first call to be early December.


  • Marketer is the flagship, award-winning, bi-monthly journal of SMPS. The mission of Marketer is to provide intelligent research, writing, and commentary to help A/E/C marketing and business development professionals perform their roles with excellence and integrity.
  • The Marketer Editorial Committee guides the editorial direction for the publication by monitoring and staying on top of trends and needs of the A/E/C industries as well as best practices in publishing.
  • The articles address issues of interest to the A/E/C industries or within the domains of practice established by the Certified Professional Services Marketer (CPSM) certification program and administered by SMPS.
  • Topics include innovative marketing, management, and leadership strategies; case studies; and lessons learned for marketing and business development professionals. Articles are written by diverse industry experts who face the challenge of marketing professional services every day.


  • All volunteers must be a current SMPS member
  • Volunteers must sign a confidentiality and conflict of interest statement
  • Committee members should not be committed to serve as a key chapter leader/volunteer during their program year (with the exception of chapter past-president)
  • This volunteer opportunity requires additional qualifications as below


  • Editorial Committee will be comprised of 12 regular members and no more than 2 advisory members (invited at the discretion of the editor), keeping in mind diversity of thought, age, race, gender, orientation, leadership, geography, industry, firm type
  • Committee is dedicated to a culture of inclusion, aligning with SMPS DEI policies
  • Each member is obligated to take on a major role during the term:
    Volunteer to co-lead a minimum of two issues during their term; co-leads will secure three features for each issue OR Lead/co-lead an ongoing column(s) for at least one year
  • Each member agrees to write a minimum of one article and recruit one new contributor during the term
  • As part of onboarding, new members will be paired with experienced members
  • Potential members should have a minimum of four years of experience in an A/E/C or editorial role, developing or writing editorial content
  • Preference will be given to previous Marketer contributors (you can upload a published article); other volunteers are required to submit editorial writing samples
  • Participants should be familiar with and agree to apply AP style; participants will adhere to the Marketer Editorial Guidelines, sharing them with potential contributors
  • Editorial Committee should be comprised of a balanced mix of FSMPS, CPSM, and non-credentialed members supporting SMPS DEI objectives



  • Participate in meetings to be held every three issues, up to three a year, via video conferencing
  • Participate, to the extent possible, in an annual in-person planning meeting, with meeting expenses (TBD) paid by SMPS
  • Cultivate content direction and themes for six issues per year
  • Designate co-lead editors for each issue
  • Designate co-leads for ongoing column(s) on an annual basis
  • Respond to SMPS editor/publisher/chair emails and Doodle polls as requested
  • Contribute articles per Commitment and Criteria section
  • Share/engage industry contacts (including those outside SMPS) to further Marketer’s mission
  • Look for diversity in contributors, topics, themes


  • Create and maintain annual calendar of column deadlines (column leads)
  • Recruit contributors and perform initial edit of feature articles or columns
  • Gather photos and bios with articles
  • Review portions of content in layout as applicable


  • In order to ensure a fair opportunity for all to serve, members may only serve on the Marketer Editorial committee for a single three-year term; after a three-year term absence, volunteers may apply to serve again
  • Participants may not serve on more than one committee at a time
  • Members may not join the committee for the purpose of promoting their firms or use the committee to engage in activities related to securing new work for their firms
