Staying in Beta

The opportunity to test things out, improve upon them, and make a difference.

In September 1, 2016, I took the reins as SMPS president. If you attended Build Business back in August, you had a chance to hear our keynote speaker Ben Casnocha. Ben taught us that we should always stay in beta, meaning that every day we have the opportunity to test things out, improve upon them, and make a difference.

In keeping with this theme, the SMPS board of directors just met in Alexandria, VA, to update our Vision and Strategic Plan. We are working hard to build upon the previous board’s strategic initiatives to keep our Society moving forward. If you haven’t had a chance to see the video highlighting the accomplishments from last year, please take a look.

As I accepted the gavel from SMPS Past-President Paula Ryan, I outlined a dream that I have for SMPS:

I dream of an SMPS that makes significant contributions to shaping the world around us and gives the tools to our members to make a difference in the communities in which they work.

I dream of a connected SMPS where allied organizations such as ACEC, ASCE, SAME, AIA, ULI, USGBC, and SCUP see our value and partner with us to be their marketing authority. At the same time, we promote these allied organizations to create a stronger A/E/C industry and community.

I dream of a transparent SMPS. All decisions and committees are open and honest, and everyone has an opportunity to contribute.

I dream of an SMPS, which not only educates our members and teaches job skills, but one that is future-focused and conducts high-level research regarding trends that affect the world and our industry.

I dream of an SMPS that helps member firms to position themselves for future opportunities and anticipate changes in our increasingly fast-paced world.

I dream of an SMPS where local, regional, and national programming is clear and connected.

I dream of an SMPS where CPSM has the same credibility and importance as AIA or P.E.

I dream of an SMPS of over 10,000 members.

I promise that the board and I will work hard over the next year to realize this dream. But we are going to need your help. All of us are ambassadors of the SMPS brand and it is incumbent upon us to live this brand in our firms, our chapters, and in our communities.

Together we can and will move our firms and the entire A/E/C industry to become marketing-led.
