In our member spotlight, Nolan Wilds, CPSM, recently sat down for a virtual chat with SMPS. Nolan, who’s business development & marketing specialist for Integrus Architecture, shares his most meaningful project, how SMPS has helped his career, and the best career advice he’s been given.
Any recent news you’d like to share? I just started at Integrus Architecture in August, moving from Oklahoma City, OK, to Seattle, WA. I’m looking forward to working at a new company and also with SMPS Seattle!
What has been one of your most meaningful projects? While I’ve had the pleasure of working on a variety of project pursuits throughout my career, I particularly gained personal fulfillment from a project that developed in parallel to my position. One of the most fulfilling experiences was developing a fundraiser event to support the non-profit STEAM Engine. This project not only allowed me to contribute to a meaningful cause but also engage with our member of the A/E/C community and the greater community in a unique and enjoyable way. The positive impact we were able to make for STEAM Engine was incredibly rewarding and stands out as a highlight in my professional journey.
What did you do at work yesterday? I worked on a proposal and took some photos of projects
What’s the best advice you’ve received regarding your career or working in A/E/C? Just get out there and talk to people.
How has SMPS helped you in your career? Joining SMPS was a game-changer for me in starting my career in the A/E/C industry. Right from the start, SMPS helped me get a solid grasp on the industry and the vibrant community we work in.
One of the best things about SMPS is the supportive network it offers. The community is filled with both experienced professionals and newcomers, all willing to share their knowledge and experiences. This environment has been key to my professional growth, giving me plenty of learning opportunities through workshops, seminars, and networking events. These experiences have not only expanded my understanding of the industry but also helped me build valuable connections with peers and mentors.
The support from the SMPS community has been incredible. Everyone is genuinely invested in each other’s success, offering advice, and encouragement along the way. This sense of camaraderie is a hallmark of SMPS, creating a nurturing environment where professionals can grow and develop their skills.
Being on the SMPS board was another pivotal experience for me. It gave me the chance to help others in their professional growth, sharing insights and strategies that worked for me. It was rewarding to give back to the community that supported me and to help foster the development of emerging professionals in the A/E/C industry. Through this role, I not only improved my leadership skills but also strengthened my commitment to collaboration and continuous learning, which are core values of SMPS.
Can you share something we’d be surprised to learn about you? I have my undergraduate degree in Japanese Language and in Theater from UMass Amherst and I completed an M.S. in Digital Media Management from Arkansas State University.
As a Certified Professional Services Marketer, how has the designation benefitted you? Obtaining my CPSM designation was a major step in solidifying my knowledge of the project pursuit process. The program provided a deep dive into best practices and key concepts like client relationship management, market research, proposal development, and presentation skills, enhancing my approach to securing projects.
The certification emphasized strategic planning, helping me align our pursuit efforts with business goals and develop targeted strategies for winning projects. It also boosted my credibility and confidence in the industry, validating my expertise and commitment to professional excellence.
In essence, the CPSM certification equipped me with the skills, insights, and confidence needed to navigate project pursuits effectively and drive successful outcomes for our organization.
What’s on your bucket list? I’d like to lead a pursuit for an international project.
Guilty pleasure: What can you not live without? I don’t think I could live without candy.
