Blueprints: Guides for Marketing and Business Development Departments in the A/E/C Industry
Blueprints is an interactive PDF containing model marketing/BD departments, recommended job descriptions, a self-assessment tool, and interview questions for marketing and business development candidates. For the individual marketing and business development professional, the guides are structured to shepherd you through your career path, help advocate for you and your position in your firm, and provide self-assessment tools to help you succeed. For A/E/C firms, the guides will assist in planning an effective marketing structure for your business and in recruiting and retaining talented, productive, satisfied employees.

Earn the Certified Professional Services Marketer (CPSM) designation. Apply to the program, join a local study group, and prepare to sit for the exam. Companies recognize the CPSM as a valuable differentiator when evaluating candidates for marketing and business development positions.
Engage in the daily online dialogue to get your name and expertise recognized in the SMPS community. Visit the Message Board in MySMPS and start a discussion with your peers today.
Several SMPS members offer career counseling and placement services in the A/E/C industry. To learn more about their services, access SMPS’s A/E/C Buyer’s Guide and search for “Placement Services” under the “Company Services” search field.
Strengthen your skills through education. Review SMPS’s local, regional, and national educational offerings and select topics that will enhance your current skill set and catch the attention of prospective employers.
The Marketing Resource Center* is an excellent online resource to tap into articles, Web sites, blogs, classes, and books on professional services marketing to expand your horizons and knowledge.
Attending Build Business, the SMPS Annual Conference, is an excellent way to enhance your network and continue to build your skill set. An article on Forbes.com by Tara Weiss entitled “Find Your Job By Going to a Conference” has some great ideas on locating your next job at event.
Stay abreast of what’s happening with other members in the network through SMPS’s e-newsletter Connections. “Members on the Move” alerts you to career changes your peers are making and could help you get your foot in the door of your dream job. Connections also publishes opportunities to get involved, demonstrate your leadership, or promote yourself (e.g., awards programs, grants, surveys, charity events) in the SMPS community and the design and building industry.
Access the 6,000 members of your SMPS network to learn about career opportunities, identify mentors, and seek recommendations and advice from your peers. This network is your greatest resource for career advancement.
Use the Online Membership Directory or the People feature on MySMPS to connect online with your peers. Build your network on MySMPS by completing your profile, participating in forum discussions, and joining groups that are of interest to you.
Join the SMPS group on Linkedin to expand and enrich your network. Like the "SMPSHQ" fan page on Facebook to receive Society news, and follow SMPSHQ on Twitter.
Volunteer at your local SMPS chapter to build relationships, demonstrate your expertise, get your name out in the network, hear about job opportunities, and expand your leadership skills. Talk to the leaders of your chapter to learn more about the business climate in your area. Nonmembers are welcome and encouraged to attend chapter programs and events.
