Recertification
The field of professional services marketing is constantly
evolving, and the depth of knowledge and skill needed for success in
today's market is extensive. Those individuals who wish to compete must
stay abreast of the latest developments in the industry. Remaining
certified demonstrates your commitment to strengthening your skills and
knowledge with the latest developments within the Domains of
Practice.
Recertification Requirements
In keeping with the high standards of
the certification program, CPSMs are required to accumulate a minimum of
50 continuing education units (CEUs) over a period of three years. CEUs
may be earned through SMPS National, chapters or other related
organizations that are committed to upholding the high standards of
marketing education and offer programs encompassing the Domains of
Practice. You have the freedom to choose where you want to earn your
CEUs and in which of the six Domains of
Practice for recertification.
One continuing education unit is
rewarded for each contact hour of instruction. A contact hour is defined
as one hour of interaction between a learner and an instructor. For
purposes of calculating CEUs, breaks, meals, and social/networking time
cannot be included in the contact time. A function with less than one
hour of contact time is not eligible for CEUs. For functions with more
than one hour of contact time, the minimum increment of contact time
eligible for CEUs is 15 minutes, which cannot be rounded up to the next
greatest interval. A presentation during a meal function can be counted
for the length of the presentation only. Meeting time devoted to
business and committee activities cannot be counted.
Renew Your Certification Every Three Years
It is expected that each CPSM will maintain a portfolio of CEUs
earned during the three-year recertification cycle. For each program
attended through SMPS or any other professional association, an
SMPS CEU Documentation Sheet MUST be completed THE DAY OF
THE EVENT and signed by the appropriate individual. Only marketing /
business development programs related to the Domains of Practice may be
counted toward the continuing education requirement for recertification.
The certified individual should file these forms. The CEU Summary Sheets should be used to document
how many credit hours have been attained for each of the domains. All
documentation should be sent to SMPS along with the recertification
application at the end of the certification cycle.
All MPs and SMPs grandfathered into the CPSM program in September
1999 must accumulate 50 credits by September 30, 2004. All other CPSMs
must earn their credits by December 31, three years after their official
certification date. Credits from one three-year certification period may
not be carried forward to another three-year period.

Alternative Ways to Earn CEUs
SMPS recognizes that individuals learn in a variety of manners. To
address the diversity of its members' learning styles, SMPS has
instituted processes by which Certified Professional Services Marketers
(CPSMs) can earn their CEUs toward recertification through methods other
than in-person learning programs. In addition to the requirements and
guidelines outlined in all recertification materials, the following
policies offer details on CEUs you can earn through alternative
means.
Speaking/Moderating at Educational Events
A CPSM who makes an educational presentation or moderates a panel or
roundtable at an event open to the general profession and marketing
community can earn one CEU for each contact hour with students. In
addition, the presenter or moderator may receive one CEU for every two
hours of research and preparation time. Note: Presentations, panels, and
roundtables delivered by a CPSM to in-house staff at one's own firm and
not open to the general profession and marketing community do not
qualify. Privately contracted (consultant) in-house training at events
not open to the general profession and marketing community also does not
qualify. However, a CPSM attending in-house training sessions does
qualify for CEUs as posted under Recertification Requirements.
To earn CEUs for presenting and moderating, complete a Speaking/Moderating Documentation Form for each
program. A maximum of 15 CEUs may be submitted during a three-year
period for this category.
A CPSM cannot earn CEUs for giving the same
presentation a second time unless proof is given that considerable
changes were made to the presentation. Likewise, a CPSM cannot earn
additional CEUs for the original research and preparation for a
presentation when it is given a second time, unless proof is given that
a considerable amount of further research and/or preparation was
completed.
Writing
A CPSM who authors an article during the recertification
timeframe is eligible to receive one CEU for every 500 words published.
This includes articles or other industry publications whose content
covers any of the six Domains of Practice and is available to the
general profession and marketing community. The author may write for
SMPS or any other organization. In addition, the author may receive one
CEU for every two hours of research used to write the article. Note:
Articles written for internal publication at one's own firm do not
qualify unless the publication is available to the general profession
and marketing community.
To earn CEUs for writing, complete a Writing Documentation Form for each article or
book. A maximum of 15 CEUs may be submitted during a three-year
period for this category.
Reading Articles in Marketer
A CPSM may earn CEUs for reading articles in SMPS' bi-monthly
journal, Marketer. One CEU can be earned for each feature
article marked with the SMPS CEU logo . At the end of each article you
can answer a series of questions to earn credits.
For documentation purposes, make a copy of your answers and store in
your recertification files. A maximum of 15 CEUs may be submitted
during a three-year period for this category.
Lifetime Certification
Certified Professional Services Marketers who maintain their
certification throughout their careers will be certified for life upon
reaching the age of 65. No further reporting is necessary except for
notifying the SMPS certification administrator of meeting the age
requirement.
