Welcome to the SMPS New Member CHALLENGE!*

This CHALLENGE will introduce you to SMPS and to the many benefits of membership. Over the course of your first year of membership, we challenge you to make the most of the SMPS experience by

• taking advantage of some great educational programming,
• growing your personal network, and
• becoming an active member of your local chapter!

Upon completion of the CHALLENGE, you will receive a $50 gift card (no more funny money!) from SMPS for your efforts.

We are confident that, as a member of SMPS, you will find you have enhanced your leadership skills and expanded your network to build more business for your firm. This CHALLENGE simply serves as a tool to help you get started!

*This CHALLENGE is for new members joining SMPS between September 1, 2009, and August 31, 2010. Student and transferred members are not eligible to participate.

Tips for Success

Here are some suggestions for tackling this CHALLENGE. If you already have completed some of the steps since joining SMPS, GREAT! Just contact one of your chapter board members and ask them to verify your participation on the CHALLENGE form.

• Visit your chapter’s Web site and the SMPS National Web site (www.smps.org) to identify programs of interest to you, and then make plans to attend. Look for upcoming events that will help you meet your professional, personal, and CHALLENGE goals.
• Ask a chapter leader about volunteer opportunities. SMPS is an excellent place to enhance your communication skills, test your management IQ, and develop your leadership abilities. Volunteering, at any level, will help you build relationships with others in your chapter, expand your network, and generate awareness of your firm in your community.
• Make an effort to network. Take plenty of business cards with you to events. Mingle! Actively seek out chapter members and leaders you would like to meet. Follow up in a few days with the people you’ve met and begin building solid, enjoyable relationships that will last throughout your career (and beyond!).
